MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE
November 2025
How inclusive is your air?

Why indoor air quality matters
We spend around 90% of our lives indoors, yet the air we share in workplaces, schools, healthcare settings, and other public buildings is rarely monitored or understood. Health risks disproportionately affect people living with chronic health conditions, compromised immune systems, or disability.

How we’re Making the invisible visible
Asking organisations globally to commit to monitoring indoor air quality in real time, and displaying that data.

Organisations can also choose to light up blue on 8th November as part of World Ventil8 Day, and share their involvement on social media.

When it’s happening
Our visibility campaign will take place World Ventil8 Day - the 8th of November. 2025

Why indoor air quality matters

We spend around 90% of our lives indoors, yet the air we share in workplaces, schools, healthcare settings, and other public buildings is rarely monitored or understood. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can be caused by airborne viruses, chemicals, mould, dust, and other contaminants, and is linked to a wide range of health risks. These risks disproportionately affect people living with chronic health conditions, compromised immune systems, or disability, making IAQ a critical accessibility and inclusion issue.

People with chronic health conditions are often forced to make difficult decisions about whether or not to enter certain indoor spaces – weighing up the need to participate against the risk to their health. In some cases, people may avoid activities altogether; in others, they may attend despite the risks, because there is no safe or accessible alternative. Low public awareness of IAQ means some people may not even realise that the air they are breathing could be putting their health and wellbeing at risk.

This is a solvable problem. By recognising IAQ as a critical factor in accessibility and taking action to improve it, we can remove these barriers and create healthier, more inclusive environments for all.

Let’s change this, together  – by Making the invisible visible.

How we’re making the invisible visible

Our goal is to shine a light on an often-overlooked but critical part of our built environments – the air we share indoors – and the need to monitor, improve, and communicate IAQ clearly and transparently, just as we do with many other public health priorities.

The Making the invisible visible campaign is a global invitation for organisations to show leadership in health, wellbeing, and inclusion by committing to:

  1. Monitoring your IAQ in real time

  2. Visibly displaying that data in your space by November 2026, so people can see and understand the air they are breathing

If your organisation is already monitoring IAQ, the next step is to make the invisible visible by displaying that data.

Organisations with the capacity to go further can join our global visibility action by:

  • Lighting up their building or other landmark in blue on 8th November as part of World Ventil8 Day, symbolising safer indoor air

  • Sharing their involvement on social media using #MTIV25 and #WorldVentil8Day

  • Displaying campaign posters or digital signage to show participation

These actions, from data transparency to lighting up in blue, make the invisible visible, helping create safer, healthier, and more inclusive indoor spaces everywhere.

When it’s happening

Our visibility campaign will take place on 8th November.

Why this day? Each year on the 8th November, advocates across the world unite to mark World Ventil8 Day, recognising the key role of ventilation and IAQ in health and wellbeing – this makes it the perfect day to shine a light on this issue.

FAQs

Why is IAQ important?

Poor IAQ can result from airborne viruses, chemicals, mould, dust, and other contaminants. These risks disproportionately affect people living with chronic health conditions, compromised immune systems, or disability — making IAQ a critical accessibility and inclusion issue.

What is World Ventil8 Day?

World Ventil8 Day, held annually on 8th November, is a global awareness day that highlights the importance of clean indoor air. It brings together communities, governments, and organisations to take action on indoor air quality (IAQ), recognising its role in health, productivity, and equity.

In Australia, the Safer Air Project is leading a campaign, Making the invisible visible, to mark World Ventil8 Day. The campaign will raise awareness of how IAQ affects inclusion, safety, and well-being, especially for people with chronic health conditions and other risk factors.

What does participation involve?

Participation means your organisation is committing to:

  1. Monitor your indoor air quality (IAQ) in real time

  2. Visibly display your IAQ data by November 2026

This is the core pledge of the campaign – to make the invisible visible by showing the air people are breathing in your space.

What if we already monitor IAQ?

If your organisation already monitors IAQ, the next step is to share that data openly. Visible IAQ displays build trust, raise awareness, and help people make informed decisions.

What else can we do?

Organisations with capacity to go further can:

  • Light up their building or other landmark in blue on 8 November for World Ventil8 Day

  • Share their involvement on social media using #MTIV25 and #WorldVentil8Day

  • Display campaign posters or digital signage in their space

If lighting up a building isn’t possible, you could:

  • Light an internal space such as a lobby or foyer

  • Share social media content or include campaign messaging in your newsletter

  • Display a poster or banner to show your support

Who can participate?

Any organisation, in any sector, from anywhere in the world. Whether you are WELL Certified, Green Star-rated, or simply committed to healthier and more inclusive spaces, your involvement will help shine a light, literally and figuratively, on the importance of safer indoor air.

What support will we receive?

Registered participants will receive a digital campaign pack, including:

  • Social media tiles and suggested captions

  • Social media banners and other graphics

  • A media release template

  • A poster

Participants will also be recognised on our campaign website.

How does this align with our organisation’s goals?

This campaign supports strategic goals in health, sustainability, inclusion, accessibility, and community engagement. It offers a way to:

  • Show support for people at higher risk from poor IAQ

  • Align with ESG, health promotion, or accessibility commitments

  • Demonstrate your role in making shared spaces safer and more inclusive

Why are buildings and landmarks lighting up?

Lighting up buildings in blue on 8th November is a visible way to raise awareness and start conversations about the importance of indoor air quality. We’re Making the invisible visible to remind the public, policymakers, and workplaces that the air we share indoors matters - and that monitoring it is the first step towards safer indoor air.

Is there a cost to participate?

No. It is free to participate in the Making the invisible visible campaign. If you would like to support our work, you could consider making a donation at support.saferairproject.com or contact us for corporate sponsorship options for our November advocacy event. Click here to register.

Who is running the campaign?

The Australian campaign, Safer shared air: Making the invisible visible, is coordinated by The Safer Air Project, a health promotion charity that advocates for the recognition of indoor air quality as a critical accessibility and inclusion issue, and raises awareness of the impact of poor IAQ on the well-being of high-risk populations. Can we promote our involvement publicly?

Yes! We encourage you to document and share your involvement by:

  • Talking about your involvement in newsletters and social media in the lead-up to the event

  • Engaging with your staff and sharing your involvement with them

  • Sharing photos or videos of your lit-up site on the day tagging @SaferAirProject and using #MITV25 and #WorldVentil8Day
